The mystery behind the ancient underwater kingdom in Turkey
According to the legend, there was an ancient city that was built in the Middle Ages between 746 and 1450 AD. The city was submerged in water and now lay at the bottom of the lake. This is what the explorers wanted to find out. They had heard of the myth and were keen to find the truth, once and for all. Tahsin Ceylan, head of the diving team on the project said, « The water level of the lake, however, has fluctuated quite dramatically over the millennia, …. slowly rising over time to cover parts of the city. »
The scientific technology we have today can not be compared to what we had in the 1950s, especially when it comes to underwater exploration. Scientists had very limited means and resources to carry out their studies, but the new team of researchers had much better and more advanced technology. In 2017, exploring the bottom of Lake Van was possible because you could dive deeper and stay underwater for longer. It was also possible to take much better photographs of the underwater terrain, something that was not the case back then.
