You’ll be surprised to learn that tourists are not the only people interested in Lake Van. Given that the lake has been in existence for more than half a million years, scientists have taken a deep interest it, trying to uncover the secrets that it hides. The bottom of the lake is covered in layers of mud, several hundred metres deep. For climate scientists, the slime is liquid gold. It holds lots of sediments which could inform studies on Earth’s climate.
Over the years, Lake Van has attracted many climatologists and vulcanologists interested in drilling cores the size of a man’s arm to examine the layers of sediment. Years have passed and teams of scientists have followed one another to Lake Van. After examining the geography and chemistry of the place, they didn’t get any really concrete results.
